Episode 06 - Magic Synthesis

The Obsidian Tale

Episode 6
[Opening 1 music]
~ Town of Igor – Central District - Passport Office ~

Only a few years ago, the Town of Igor begun its creation and civilians set afoot in hopes of a new society that differs from the common villages and cities elsewhere. You would think that a new town would be beautified almost everywhere, but in places such as the passport office… well…
“This place looks kind of run-down,” Felix said to himself.
He stood by the doorway. There were a few tumbleweeds passing behind him. It was so dead quiet that you could easily imagine tumbleweeds having a voice of their own. Felix slowly opened the door and a female worker rummaged in front of him. [Music 6.1]
“Hi, hi!~ Welcome to the passport office!”
She wore a white marine-looking cap with an unusual pink jumpsuit. Yes, the garment even squeaked with each motion she made. She looked as if she was sweating, but that’s nothing to consider, especially since she must have constantly ran all over the office to guide those who needed passports.
“Uh… Hey. How do I get a passport for the Town of Igor?”
“Yes, yes! Passports are important. I will take you to the examination room!”
As she began pushing him from behind, he tried to stop her persistency. He was forced into a room and lights were shining on him.
“Good, good! You are now ready to take the exam. Question number one!”
“W-Wait! Shouldn’t I get a pamphlet or something to study with?”
“Oh, oh! No worries, good sir! I assure you the questions are quite simple. As I was saying, we shall begin the examination!”
The worker unnecessarily had a microphone in her hand and her voice echoed across the room. The only other person in the office was a sleeping man at the reception desk outside the examination room.
“So, so! First question: At what year, month, day, and hour did Igor’s death take place?”
            Felix paused. “Excuse me?”
“Uh oh, uh oh! Wrong answer! Question number two: What is Igor’s ethnicity?”
            Felix gasped. “What?! I don’t think-…”
“Hm, hm? You don’t think? You must think in order to pass! Final question, if you get this correct, then you get a passport!”
“What was the point of the first two questions then?!”
“Yes, yes! That is the correct answer! One of Igor’s greatest philosophies was to question the difficulty of certain questions especially when irrelevant. You have surely studied Igor’s philosophical novel, haven’t you?”
The strange worker took out a camera and captured a picture of Felix with a confused and disturbed look.
“Nice, nice! I will screen this right away! Come back to the reception desk for your ID!”
Felix gave a smirk. “Oh, okay sure.”
Felix made his way out to the front desk and the sleeping man was snoring. As loud as the female worker was with the passport machine, the man didn’t wake up.
            “Here, here! It is complete!”
“But my face…” Felix sighed. “That’s fine. Thank you.” [End music]

~ Town of Igor – Eastern District – Geologic Laboratory ~

Felix headed towards the Eastern District of the town and from a close distance, he could see a large laboratory and a courtyard filled with children running around. Their own parents were off to the side, watching them. Each side of the courtyard had a fountain of cupid pouring water out of a pot. The grass looked fake; it might as well be. Some of the children used patches of grass as hair. At one point, Felix could see a mother slap her child in the face as he fell to the ground crying.
Shivering, Felix tried to ignore the “peaceful” town that he had envisioned. The front gate was already left open and there were no guards or anyone on patrol.
Upon entering the Geologic Laboratory, the worker at the front desk asked for a passport ID; however, he looked a little nervous. Felix handed over his passport and the man didn’t bother to look. He only nodded and allowed Felix through the next room. What made him so nervous?
Awkwardly, Felix slowly arrived at the next room of his choice – the library. All he could hear was an aggressive shuffle between one pile of books and another pile.
“E-Excuse me? Is anyone there?” Felix asked nervously.
“Stay back!” A female voice commanded.
            “Rina? It’s Felix!” [Music 3.2]
Rina turned around with her teeth clenched and her eyes in deep anger. Lydia only sat next to her best friend, pretending to read a book up-side down.
            “Huh? Did something happen?”
Rina threw a book towards the other side of the room. It clashed against the walls.
“These are all filled with bullshit!”
“What are you talking about? Did you read all of these already? And how did you get in here without a passport?”
“I threatened the woman at the passport office.”
Felix realized this must have been the reason why the woman let him pass so easily. She was afraid of being threatened again, much like the man at the front desk in the laboratory.
“Do you see what these people are doing to Lydia?”
“No... You never told me the exact reason why the army is chasing after you two.”
“Not me. Her,” Rina said. “The Gammel government is actually a conspiracy. What people don’t know is that the government is targeting Lydia because she’s different from all of us. I knew they needed her but I never understood the reason up until now.”
Felix was surprised. “Wait, what do you mean by ‘different’?”
“Lydia’s spirit is of an Obsidian descent. Do you know what happened to her family?”
“No, but I’m going to assume you’re going to tell me.”
“Lots of things happened, actually. No matter how much I tell Lydia about her past, she can’t seem to remember a damn thing because that bastard scientist crystallized her memory into a shard!”
She grabbed one of the books on the floor and she threw it to Felix. “Look at page 64.”
As Felix rummaged through the pages, he could see an orb filled with seven colors. He first looked at the blue shard: truth.
“Do you see now? The professors here in this town must be studying under that mad scientist. These books are recent studies on the crystallization of Obsidian memories. All Lydia has right now is the truth shard. The seven shards in order of color is Love, Courage, Knowledge, Instinct, Truth, Fear, and Sympathy.”
Felix began reading the ‘Fear’ shard and then he asked, “Why would we want to recover the Fear shard? We can just recover whatever keeps her strong.”
“Are you an idiot? Read the bottom of the page. It talks about harmonization. With only Fear, she will fear. But with Courage, that fear will be protected. If you only have Courage, your determination will be too strong and reckless without Fear. You need to have both in order to have her spirit controlled properly. We must get all seven shards in order to harmonize her personality again.”
Felix closed the book. “Then… why would they have this book here? It’s supposed to be published before creating such science.”
“They don’t need to publish anything. This whole library is an archive of suspicious work. All the professors here must be plotting something.”
Felix shook his head. “No. That doesn’t make any sense. The old woman I met at the park told me that Igor was famous for his geologic work. I have to speak to someone named Professor Talbot!”
“Professor Talbot? For all we know, he could be a psychotic man. If you’re still not convinced at the orb creations, read this other book here.”
Rina threw a different source towards Felix’s face.
Felix skimmed through the first few pages. “The Obsidian race is what protects the natural energy of flame. Now with the source being taken away and stored, we are able to create a large protection group. However, we are still missing one source. That one small source blocks our complete extraction of the volcanic energy.”
Felix closed the book. “That was weird and I don’t get it.”
“The Gammel government is stealing all the fire spirit for themselves. The only way to take all the energy is to… cause a genocide.”
            “A-A genocide?! Then that means Lydia’s family…”
“Now do you understand? The government is after her, claiming to the public that she is dangerous. But in truth, they only want her source of power in order to complete the extraction. Right now, the army is still chasing after Lydia in order to get rid of the evidence while another part of the army is in search of the shards. What I think is that Lydia will continue to emit Obsidian energy which is exactly why one half of the government is still after her.”
“They should just give up. We already have one shard installed into Lydia again.”
Rina shook her head. “I wish it were that simple, but her mind can be re-extracted, so I have to be extra careful. I need to get all of those shards, immediately!”

How to Get it On

As Rina was heading for the next section of books, she examined the title: “Child Persuasion – The 180 Switch”.
As Rina began reading thoroughly, Felix watched her and Lydia. Lydia began biting a book that she had in her hands. Rina’s eyes widened and she was about to speak, but she was interrupted by another visitor. [End music]
A woman appeared by the automatic sliding door. She had long, black hair combed to her waist and her round glasses reflected against the light from the windows. She had a long, white trench coat with several pieces of papers hanging out of her pockets.
“Who are you?!” Rina readied her arms for a fireball attack.
“Oh? My name is Professor Nell,” She smiled while holding onto a clipboard.
Felix placed his arm in front of Rina. “Wait.”
Rina rolled her eyes. “What is it now, Suspenders?”
“Professor Nell, I am looking for a man by the name of Professor Talbot. Do you know where he is?”
Professor Nell began to blush. “Oh my, yes I do. He is highly looked upon by many in this town. He recently returned from an exhibition and said he has recovered a nice accessory. I really hope he is planning a proposal.”
“Wow, this guy’s a real sucker,” Rina insulted.
“Rina, please,” Felix said. “I need to talk to him. I need to ask him for the safest places to live in.”
Professor Nell giggled. “I would say the Town of Igor! It is quite new and peaceful.”
Rina threw a book onto the ground. “Peaceful? You’re using this place to create your dirty work!”
“Dirty work? Professor Talbot only ordered me to get books from the shelf to the very left. I see it is one of the few shelves left intact…”
As she grabbed one of the books, Rina asked her, “And what topic is that shelf about?” [Music 5.1]
“Weapon and magic synthesis. He wanted me to focus more on the source of magic and apply it to weapons. I never asked for the purpose, but as an intern, I want to try my very best and do what I can in order to become a great geologic professor just like Mr. Talbot, and of course, Professor Talbot.”
Felix slapped a book out of Lydia’s hand, a book that she was already chewing on.
Rina gave a sigh. “Geez… So you’re just an oblivious woman, aren’t you?”
Professor Nell frowned. “I only want to become the greatest in order to help continue human life across generations. The world is slowly falling apart because we are using too much natural energy. I was told in order to start the organization, we must focus on the easiest portion of nature – fire. This takes place at the Frolix Volcano.”
“You can’t do that! Do you not realize that in order to do this, it takes the lives of those living as an Obsidian?! People die, and you’re going to be okay with that?”
Nell became silent. She suddenly headed for the shelf that she intended to examine.
“That seems like quite a predicament. This is not the kind of science I was focused to work on, as I am only a weapon and magic catalyst.”
“Magic?” Felix said slowly, amazed at the idea of raw natural sources coming out of a person’s own hands, much like Rina. “Rina, I never asked, but where did you get yours?”
            Nell gasped.
Rina clenched her fists. “It’s something I’m not proud of, but I use it to protect myself.”
“You have the power of natural magic?!” Nell jumped as she grabbed both of Rina’s hands. “Please, let me study you!”
            “What? No way!”
Felix shook his head. “But that’s impossible. I’ve only read about magic from mythical books.”
“I didn’t know you were the kind of guy to read, Suspenders. I thought all villagers were just brainless fools.”
“Well, I don’t read often. It’s the abandoned house that I always go to that used to have lots of books. Then I kind of burned them for bonfires.”
            “What the hell?!”
“P-Please settle down, you two. I have a proposal,” Nell suggested. She opened a book on magic catalysts, “I want to see what would happen if direct magic was placed into a few weapons. If you follow me to my mini-lab, we can test it out.”
Rina gave a smirk. “Hm, sounds like a good idea considering that spamming my fireballs would exhaust me more than using some kind of lame weapon. I might take your offer on that.”
“Thank goodness! Please come with me!”
The teenagers followed, and Rina had to slap another book out of Lydia’ mouth. [End music]

~ Town of Igor – Eastern District – Nell’s Mini-Lab ~

Professor Nell’s lab looked small from the outside, but it was much larger inside after realizing how clean her room was. Each test tube was placed in order from smallest to largest. They were sparkly too! Several different kinds of weapons were placed in groups of close-ranged combat and long-ranged combat. Posters were on each side of the room, right in the center. It was almost as if she had obsessive compulsions.
“This room is bright and blue,” Lydia commented. “The silence is too clear.”
“Why thank you, kind lady,” Nell giggled. “You don’t talk much, but when you do, it is such a compliment.”
“There is a rock in my shoe,” Lydia added.
            “What?”
Rina stood in front of Lydia. “Um, ignore her.”
Felix whispered to her, “It’s the truth shard speaking, isn’t it?”
“Sh!” Rina gave a scowled expression. She whispered to him, “We don’t want this woman to know that Lydia is an Obsidian.”
Professor Nell displayed all of the weapons for Rina to see. It was quite similar to what Felix saw in the battleship back in the village. Large swords and metal bows were all over the place. Several different types of guns were organized into the corner.
Felix looked at his crescent blade. “Whoa… So we can put magic into these?”
Nell shrugged. “Hopefully. Right now, only direct magic can easily be catalyzed as I am still researching more on natural energy. Young woman,”
            “Rina.”
“Rina, my apologies. Please choose a weapon and I will see if we can catalyze it with your magic!”
Rina viewed all of the weapons from left to right.
“Hey, if you get to keep these weapons, you might as well choose something threatening!” Felix said.
            “Shut up, I know.”
“How about the scythe?” He asked. “Or maybe that awesome machine gun.”
            “Yeah, yeah. I got you.”

Choose Your Weapon Wisely

Lydia grabbed a weapon off to the corner. The handle was made of wood, but there was a steel chain attached to the wooden stick along with a metal ball with spikes. [Music 4.1]
            “This is?” She said slowly.
“That is called a flail. Some people claim it to be a morning star, and I would say that does sound quite beautiful.”
Lydia suddenly attacked the corner of the table. It made a small crack and Nell screamed. She began to fall into tears.
“A-Are you okay, sweetie?!” The professor began rubbing the corner of her table, more concerned about the table rather than Lydia’s personal well-being.
Felix grabbed Lydia’s weapon. “Lydia, don’t do that!”
“This weapon is powerful for me. I like it.”
“Don’t use it unless you have to. Actually, why don’t I hold it until you’re… conscious to attack at necessary times?” Felix kindly took the weapon away from Lydia’s hands.
“I have decided!” Rina finally finished.
Rina grabbed a weapon in front of her and then she turned around. Professor Nell and Felix suddenly frowned.
“Are you… kidding me?” Felix sighed.
“Oh!” Nell blushed. “Eheh, y-you chose that one of all weapons??”
Rina agreed with them. “Mhm! Knives!! Actually, they’re throwing knives.”
“Are you stupid? Once you throw those at enemies, you can’t take them back unless you run up to them.”
Rina pouted. “You’re calling me stupid? Such audacity! I can just use magic to boomerang it back to me. If I can make flames burst in front of the weapon after it is thrown at a target, the knife can come bursting right back to me. I’m pretty good with controlling my magic, after all. So yeah, get with the program.”
Felix turned to Nell, “No one would get with the program because no one has magic…”
Nell giggled. “I would say that is a marvelous idea!”
Rina tilted her head, “What the hell is this, Suspenders? You’re trading your crescent blade for a flail?”
Felix suddenly hid the flail behind his back, “H-Hey! Lydia chose it.”
“Oh. I was going to say, nice choice. If Lydia can’t control her movements, we might as well hold onto it. Here, put it in my backpack.”
Rina turned around and she only stood there, waiting for Felix to walk over to her. Felix gave a long pause.
“Well, are you going to put it in my backpack or not?”
“Aren’t you going to take it off?”
“Why should I make the effort of doing that? Hurry up. You come over here instead.”
Felix placed the flail in the backpack without questioning her. After all, that backpack must have sentimental value such that Rina would never take it off. [End music]
“Anyway, so how does this catalyst crap work? I’m interested.”
“Oh, right! First, we will have to place the knives onto the table. Then, focus your magic into it and if light begins to emit into the weapon, the catalyst is complete!”
Rina gave an uninterested look at Nell. “That’s your research? Putting two simple things together?”
“Like I said, it’s not simple when you don’t have natural magic.”
“If you say so,” Rina said. She began focusing her magic on the knife and red light was pouring out of it.
Nell was ecstatic. She began dancing in circles, finally being able to see her research progress at light speed.
“Oh my goodness, oh my goodness! It’s actually working!”
            Rina began to blush. “Yeah…”
Rina’s hands began to shake and her eyes were almost watering. Felix noticed, but before he could say anything, Rina’s hands shifted by accident and the knife flew forward and off the table. The flames from her hands dispersed and Rina fell backwards with Felix barely being able to hold onto her. Rina paused with her eyes opened wide. She suddenly pushed Felix away.
“Get away. I don’t need your help.”
            “Hey… You almost did it.”
Nell clapped her hands together. “That’s close enough! Would you like to stay to help me on my research?! You are amazing, indeed!”
Rina grabbed onto Lydia’s hand. “It’s fine. I have to see This Talbot guy immediately. Then, I need to collect those shards for Lydia.”
“Oh, that’s a shame… Will you come back?”
“Maybe. But right now, I’m in a hurry. Can I take these knives?”
Felix squinted his eyes. “What’s the hurry all the sudden? You still need more practice.”
“Look, I just wanted to see if I can use a weapon with the help of my magic powers. It turns out that I can, and so I’m leaving with it. So, where’s Talbot?”
Nell gave the teenagers a map of the laboratory. “Very well, if you are in a hurry, then I might as well support you since you helped my research by a landslide. This is a map of all the professors in this building. Professor Talbot is my mentor, so please be kind to him.”
Rina snatched the map away from the professor, “Yeah, okay. Thanks.”
Felix bowed to Professor Nell. “Thank you so much for your help. I want to come back and see your research progress someday!”
Nell blushed. “That is so considerate of you! I promise to try my best. Thank you for your help as well!”
The three students began to rush out of the building to find their next target: Professor Talbot.

~ Town of Igor – Eastern District – Talbot’s Lab ~

The hallways of the laboratory were long, but it was obvious figuring out which door led to Professor Talbot’s room. Of course, it would be the largest door. Rina knocked on the door aggressively. Felix whispered to her, hoping she would show a little more respect to one of the most famous geologic professors in the world.
“HELLO?!” Rina shouted after realizing that there was no answer.
            “Rina, seriously!”
Lydia suddenly kicked the door several times and Felix had to stop her.
            “I need the flail.”
            “N-No you don’t.”
Rina suddenly casted a fireball at the door and it exploded. Some of the professors from the smaller rooms came out in surprise. There was debris all over the hallway, and all you could hear were coughs and complaints made by the professors.
“Oh look, the door opened,” Rina said sarcastically.
“Why do you always do this?” Felix frowned, remembering the time when she exploded his walls back in the village.
“My, my,” A familiar voice spoke from inside the room. “I guess I will need to get that fixed pretty soon,” he said casually.
Rina grinned. “I had a feeling.”
Felix was shocked when he saw the professor. “Aren’t you…?!”
Professor Talbot appeared with a smile. “Yes, it is I, the scientist.” [Music 1.3]
“Not just any scientist, either,” Rina said. “This is the same guy who attacked Lydia and crystallized her memory into an orb!”
“What?!” Felix glared over to Professor Talbot, “That’s him? How are people looking up to him then?”
            “Conspiracies,” Rina answered.
The professor said with his nonchalant voice, “Now, now, children. It is not nice to claim conspiracy over those who are trying to promote world preservation.”
Rina grabbed onto her newly acquired knives. “We’re even on the weapons now, Talbat! You’re going to pay for this!”
            “It’s ‘Talbot,” he corrected her.
Professor Talbot threw a strange object into the air and then he caught it. The object was shining in indigo.
“I wouldn’t recklessly attack me if I were you. I have something you need.”
Rina and Felix were both utterly surprised. He was holding another shard?! [End music]
