The Obsidian Tale
Amitt was most wonderful during the
night. At every direction, there were large masses of dandelions and alpacas
just roaming around the hills. A few people who were still awake late at night
were allowed to pet a few wild alpacas. They were all surprisingly tame.
“Hehe!” Forrest snuck his way out of
the inn with Warren in order to play with the alpacas for the night instead of
getting a good night’s sleep. That’s the usual, at least for them...
Hazel and Leo were in the living
room, planning their next trip.
Rina took a step out of her bedroom,
noticing that Viola was standing in the hallway, looking at a particular
picture frame.
“What are you looking at?” Rina
asked her. [Music 8.2]
It was a picture of a typical mother
and father, both holding each of the little girl’s hands as the three of them
walked down the road in between Loomin and Vector. As Rina took sight of the
frame, she immediately knew what Viola was thinking.
Viola began to speak. “It must be
nice to have parents.”
“Not if they kick you out and blame
you for breathing,” Rina joked.
Viola gave a chuckle. “They do not
do it because they dislike you.”
“What do you mean?”
“They want to test whether you can
really save the world by stopping Magnus. They kicked you out, hoping you would
choose to leave. They hoped you wouldn’t want to come back until everything is
over.”
“Why would they want that? How would
you know if you never met them?”
“Because, they have to protect their
kingdom. They must believe you’re old enough to make your own choices by now.
Besides, they have no one else to turn to besides their trusting daughter.”
Rina thought about the
responsibility of having to stop Magnus from destroying an entire world. “They
have that much faith in me? That’s a
pretty big weight to carry…” She suddenly gasped. “Wait, how would you even
know all this? You don’t ev-“
“You don’t have to believe me. After
all, I’m a former Gammel unit.”
“That doesn’t mean…” Rina was
interrupted by Viola’s chuckles.
Rina began to soften up. “Heh, I can
never get through to you. Thanks for the pep-talk though. You should get some
sleep.”
“I will,” Viola said without turning
around. As Rina walked away, Viola stared closer into the picture frame. She imagined
Rina as the little girl and her mother and father as the parents in the
picture. Viola was reminded of the time she briefly wandered off from the group
back at the floating city of Lament.
“Who
are you?!” The Blood Raven said in a panic.
“I
travel with Rina. I have come to find my leader and stop her from making any
reckless moves against Master Magnus.”
“Are
you all still with that Master Magnus stuff?”
Viola
paused. She decided it was better to change the subject. “Tell me, what is your
relationship with Rina?”
Back in the present
times, Viola began to smile. “No matter how strict parents can be, deep down,
they are able to love their children – just like Rina’s family.” [End music]
[Music 47.1] It was almost the next morning
before dawn and everyone in the main group had fallen asleep by now, except for
Lydia. The sky was still bright out and she blankly stared out the window,
hoping something would change for her.
“Felix…” She thought to herself.
“Where are you? …Are you alive?” It was still windy out. “There is still so
much I need to say to you. I know it sounds very farfetched to try and revive
you from who-knows-where, but I really want to try it after we defeat Magnus.
King Redlin said we need a physical form that belongs to you – to help revive
you. But…” She began to cry. “we don’t even have a single thing from you.”
Both her arms were placed against
the desk and she placed her chin onto them. The moment she closed her eyes, she
felt a strange presence nearby her. It was as if a hand moved away from her
face. Lydia alertly sat up, quickly looking around. She then saw a shadowy
figure move past the window. Normally, people would get scared of this, but she
mindlessly jumped out the window in hopes of being able to chase after the shadow.
It was moments until she arrived at
the shipwright’s shop. The front door opened and Lydia was barely able to see a
figure go in. Following it in, only the shipwright was inside, still working on
one of the airships.
“Gah!” He shouted in surprise. “You
scared me!” [End music]
Lydia sighed. “Oh phew, it’s just
you.” [Music 46.2]
“What? I work here. You’re with that
group, yes?”
“Oh- Um, yeah. Is the airship almost
done?”
The airship was about 50x50 meters,
engraved in brown, yellow, and blue colors mixed together. It was also two
stories high. It was a magnificent, new model that no other person in the world
had seen before. Of course! The shipwright used the same model given by Gunther
Redlin’s orders found from Waltzer’s recipe book.
“It has been done for the past hour.
I’m just cleaning up a bit.”
“Did you see anyone come in?”
“Yeah – you.”
“I’m serious, sir.”
“I am too. Strange though. I heard
the door open but it took a while for you to just walk in here.”
Besides them, Rina came in
afterwards. “There you are, Lydia! I was kind of worried you just disappeared
on us.”
“How did you find me?”
“Weird to say, but an alpaca
followed your scent.”
Forrest appeared as well. He had a
proud look on his face. “I made friends with this llama thing!”
“It’s – an – alpaca,” Rina said
angrily.
The tall-necked alpaca walked
towards Lydia, and then past her.
The shipwright gasped. “Hey, don’t
bash yourself against the ship!”
Forrest ran over to it. “S-Sorry!
Come on, Lala, walk this way.”
“…You named the alpaca?” Rina judged
him.
The rest of the group entered the
building.
Forrest pointed at Rina, “Yeah I
did, and it’s a good name!!”
Rina tried to punch him. “You idiot!
It’s a stupid name!”
“Lalalalala, I can’t hear you!”
“BLEHHHH!” the alpaca screeched,
remembering its name.
Forrest giggled. “See? She likes it
too!” Rina clenched her teeth in frustration.
The shipwright opened his arms. “Ah,
wonderful! You’re all here. The ship is ready.”
“How much will this cost?” Hazel
wondered.
“500,000 gold.”
Hazel slapped Leo by the sleeve.
“Cough up the money.”
“H-Hey! Are you serious?” Leo
frowned. Hazel only glared at him. “Fine…” He checked his wallet but he just
remembered that he was short on money. “I only have 460,000 gold on me.”
The shipwright sighed. “Not enough
money?! Ah… whatever. You received orders from the king of Wiserheim. I assume
this mission of yours must be really important. I’ll take 460,000 gold.”
In the background, Forrest was
constantly poking the alpaca’s nose until it headbutt itself against Forrest’s
stomach. He fell over and Warren had to help pick him up. Rina laughed instead.
Hazel and Viola were the first to
enter the airship.
Forrest jumped. “We should give our
own airship a name too!”
Rina clenched her fists. “Damn it,
who cares!”
The shipwright shouted at her,
“Every loving ship needs a name, sweetcheeks!”
“Whatever…” Rina said quietly.
Forrest shook his head. “Um,
‘Whatever’ isn’t a good name for the ship, Rina…”
Rina grabbed his collar and then she
tossed him against the floor, breaking through the ground. “You toy with me
again and I’m going to throw you so hard that you’ll break through the floor
and end up on the other side of the world!”
Forrest had a bruise on his head.
“Sorry, sorry!! But at least that’ll get me to Kyrie faster.”
“How about the ‘Crescent’?” Warren
suggested.
The group became quiet.
Lydia felt the ship’s exterior. “A
ship dedicated to Felix,” She smiled. “That sounds beautiful.”
Forrest pointed at the ship’s front
mirrors. “Alright, Lala, all aboard the Crescent!”
Leo raised his eyebrows. “What?
We’re going to bring an alpaca with us?”
Rina glared at Forrest.
Forrest sighed. “Fine… But I’m
coming back for you! Now that we have an airship, I can come back and visit all
the time, okay?”
The alpaca began grooming itself
against Forrest’s face to show its love.
Forrest giggled. “Hehehe! Hey, that
tickles!”
The shipwright gave Warren a manual.
“You look like a worthy pilot. Here’s the instructions.”
“What? Me?! But…” He turned to Leo.
Leo shrugged. “Don’t look at me.
You’re the one who named the ship.”
“No pressure, right?” Warren said
sarcastically.
As the group entered the ship, Lydia
peered her head out before closing the door. “Thank you so much, sir!”
“Thank you for giving me an opportunity to work for the king!” He gave one
more smile before the ship was parting off.
Lydia looked around, wondering if
any shadowy figure was nearby. No sign of such thing. It took a few minutes
before Warren felt confident to steer the ship from start to finish. The ship
was slowly hovering out of the large doorway in the back of the building. It
began floating, then it flew faster. [End music]
They were finally flying on their
own! The main group now had their own ship to roam free throughout the world
without having to travel by foot any longer. Such freedom had been given to the
group who made a long effort to protect Lydia and stop Magnus from speeding the
destruction process. Their next destination was the Tree of Revision that both Hazel and Leo suggested.
[Music 47.2] “We’re so high up!! Look at the
ground under us,” Forrest pointed. Lydia was resting on a couch, agreeing with
everything Forrest said mindlessly. She was too focused on the whole Magnus
issue along with Felix’s disappearance. “Lydia, I can see the forest that we
first journeyed together in! It’s so far away. I wonder how Kyrie and Ouli… uh…
Oh whatever. It’s so amazing up here!!!”
The group headed west in order to
reach the other side of the world map quicker. Directly west was the Tree of
Revision; however, it was very high up and quite steep. There was no way the
entire airship could land nearby.
“The tree is too steep! There is no
way we can land the Crescent,” Warren repeated from the pilot room.
The rest of the group was scattered
across the airship. Rina and Viola were in isolated bedrooms, needing some
privacy for themselves. Both Hazel and Leo were in the lobby room. Hazel tried
to figure out how to use the radio in front of her. She pressed random buttons
until she finally connected to him.
“Can you hear me?”
“Yes, I can hear you.”
“Wow, this technology stuff is
beyond me. Anyway, I think the closest place to land would be the northeast
portion of the Merridian Laboratory.”
“That’s right below where we are.”
“Oh. Well this radar map thing is
beyond me as well,” she chuckled. She pressed a button again, thinking she
turned off the radio, but it only raised her volume. “That nutjob. He sounds so
nervous.”
“H-Hazel! I can still hear you!”
Hazel quickly grabbed the radio. “Oh
goodness! Leo, help me shut this demon machine off!”
Leo gasped. “Wh-What?!” He was busy
holding on to a small spherical stone ornament from the side of the room.
“I-I’m busy here.”
“Get your butt over here. The
crybaby can hear us!”
“Ma’am!!!” Warren whined.
Hazel screamed. “Damn it!!”
Masked Man of the Crescent
The Crescent airship landed
northeast of the Merridian Laboratory.
Hazel yawned as she got off the
ship. “We’re finally here. Goodness, that ship ride was a mess.”
Leo rolled his eyes. “Blame it to
the lady who couldn’t use technology properly.”
“I’m going to gouge your eyes out,”
Hazel threatened him.
Viola clapped her hands. “What a
pleasant thing to say,” she giggled.
Leo shivered. “I still can’t tell
when you’re joking…”
As the group banded together, they
exited the Crescent airship. In front of them was a large placement of old
machinery that seemed foreign to all of them. There were old, broken computers,
bicycles, and convenient kitchen machineries. Several utility poles’ wires
connected to one another which was a bit frightening to the main group. [End music]
Lydia was facing the fogged-up city
in front of her, now known as a wasteland for tests and laboratories. [Music 47.3]
“What a horrible sight…” Lydia said
slowly.
Rina knelt down, looking at a robotic
plant. “This must be one of their peaked technologies. You would think within
the past thousand years, someone would drop by and do research on these
machines.”
“People these days are told of the
myth that this laboratory is haunted,” Hazel responded.
Forrest jumped. He tugged against
Leo’s coat. “H-H-H-H-Haunted?!?!”
“Relax,” Hazel smiled. “It is just a
myth. Now I see why such claims were given. It was to hide the fact that this
laboratory had much to offer, but going through step one would be the hardest:
to figure out how to work these machines and reproduce them.”
Lydia scratched her head. “So why
hasn’t a single person besides Igor and visited here?”
Hazel answered for her. “Well, the
tides are rough here, so it would be difficult by boat. The only other way to
get here would be by airship, and we are in the generation where airships are
returning full throttle.”
Rina stopped her for a moment. “Now
hold on. The shipwright at Amitt seems like a professional. That means he’s
making airships for a while. Shouldn’t the Winstel government spend their funds
on getting their butts to this laboratory for research?”
Hazel snapped her fingers. “Good way
of thinking, Rina. However, the airship models are not advanced enough to land
on these kind of surfaces. Our ship currently took the risk actually. I doubt
the Crescent airship could last long if we leave it here for a while. It’s best
to get it checked up and repaired as soon as possible – if necessary.”
Warren picked up a cellphone nearby.
“And, these little devices… surely not every inventor in the world from a
thousand years ago died at once, did they?”
Hazel shook her head. “Perhaps they
were not to talk about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the government back then
would be able to listen to every single person in the world through some kind
of radio technology. Even I had trouble working that thing.”
“Just you,” Leo joked. Hazel punched
his face to the ground.
Viola poked one of the roses and it
shattered. “Good riddance to technology. It partially destroyed nature, as you
can see.”
Rina followed along, “That’s
probably true, but they might have used a lot of energy for that.”
Hazel jumped in front of a computer
screen. “What interests me most is this square device with a bunch of letters
on them! QWERTY… and so on! Was this the order of their alphabet? Now this is exactly what I want to do
research on!”
Hazel the Maniac
Lydia gasped. “You’re really going
to research in a territory that hasn’t been messed with for a thousand years?”
“I might so. The only other person
must have been Professor Igor who accidentally revived Waltzer twenty years
ago.”
Rina shrugged. “If you happen to do
some research here, then don’t go screwing things up like he did.” Hazel only
laughed at her.
Isolated Territory
Warren pointed at the road behind
them. “Might I interfere and suggest we head to the tree quickly before Magnus
does something peculiar?”
Leo agreed with him. “That would be
best. We can look into this laboratory at a later time when things calm down.” [End music]
As the group made their way
northeast to the Tree of Revision, Lydia turned around again. It was as if the
shadowy figure was finally gone… But why?
The group of seven took about an
hour to reach the top of the mighty tree. Sure, the land below was all
wasteland, brown to the pulp… but this particular tree was bright green and
golden. Not even birds dared to land on the tree barks. There was just utter
silence besides the wind and the group’s footsteps. [Music 39.1]
Leo scratched his head. “Ah, no sign
of that dang Magnus guy yet.”
Hazel took out the world map of
Rhadessia. “I don’t understand. This should be the only tree that he was
talking about.” He stared closely. “Could it also be at a place called
Lumious?”
“What’s that??” Forrest asked in
confusion.
Warren chimed in. “From what I
remember, it was a sacred place for master pilgrimages and holy magicians. One
of them in particular is someone Hazel and I know very dearly.”
“We do not know where she is, but
that is not the point. I have yet to know whether Lumious is still at its
glory,” Hazel added.
Lydia knelt down. She felt really
warm, but it was not to the point that it was hurting her. It just felt…
strange to her.
Rina followed her. “L-Lydia! Are you
alright?”
“Yeah… does anybody else feel that?”
“…Feel what?”
“It’s kind of hot up here.”
Rina scratched her head. “Um… I
think the weather is just fine up here. Anybody else?” The rest of the group
shrugged.
“Why…? Why is it just me?” Lydia
asked.
Did
you feel that?!
Lydia suddenly looked forward. “What
the?! Did you all hear a voice just now?”
Rina squinted her eyes in concern.
“Lydia, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m starting to think something
is wrong here.”
I
heard it too.
Lydia coughed. “It must
be here…” She tried to get up.
Forrest tilted his head. “What
is???”
Hazel was shocked. “Wait a minute!
Could this be it?!”
Lydia tried to drag herself closer
to the tree. “The Tree of Revision… ‘revision’… repeat… start all over…” She
mumbled to herself. “This is the sacred tree that King Redlin must have talked
about!”
Even Viola had her eyes opened
widely. Warren wanted to head closer to the tree as well. “Miss Lydia, surely
you don’t mean this is the place for reviving Felix?”
Lydia nodded. “It has to be! But… we
don’t have a physical form of him.”
“And that doppelganger charm,” Rina
said.
“Hey, don’t lose faith in the charm
I bought at Amitt!” Leo shouted from afar.
Lydia was about several feet from
the tree. The group hesitated to get closer, in case something would happen if
a non-Obsidian got near the tree.
“It makes sense. It requires
Obsidian energy, and I am here. Like the volcano, the tree is reacting
naturally. And that voice I heard… It was Felix’s!”
Forrest screamed. “He’s a ghost?!?!
EAAAGH!”
Hazel grabbed onto Forrest’s head to
calm him down. “Stay put!” [End music]
Rina shook her head. “We don’t even
have the Avian orb yet. It could be dangerous to reach that tree without the
proper ingredients, so get back here!” [Music 37.3]
Lydia fell to the ground within
three feet from the tree. “No, not yet! We are so close, I can hear his voice!”
She began crawling this time.
Leo began running towards her.
“That’s it, I need to stop her before something happens!” As he was almost near
the tree, he was quickly tossed back by an invisible force.
“The sacred tree does not allow
those who aren’t from Celestian descent,” Hazel claimed.
“You should have told me that
sooner!” Leo rolled his eyes.
“I simply didn’t guess it,” Hazel
said bluntly.
“Almost… there!!!” Lydia’s hand
finally touched the tree. It turned extremely bright and everybody had to close
their eyes. After a few more seconds, the light became tamer.
Rina covered her eyes with her
sleeves, and she noticed that her necklace was shining, along with whatever was
inside her backpack. Furthermore, Leo’s pocket began vibrating.
“What? You mean this necklace that
Faris gave me…”
Forrest pointed at Rina’s backpack.
“What else do you have?!”
Rina fell on her back. “N-Nothing!
Just…” She quickly took off her backpack and opened it, revealing Lydia’s blue
teddy bear from Celestia.
Leo took out the two necklaces he
bought from the merchant girl. “So it really is real!”
Lydia opened her arms out. “Here,
give me those! This must be for Felix!”
Rina and Leo slowly made their way
towards Lydia while Warren made sure Forrest did not fall back. Hazel and Viola
guarded themselves as well.
As Lydia grabbed onto the blue teddy
bear, she looked into Rina’s eyes. “You kept it all this time,” she said with a
soft smile.
“I didn’t want to see you just trash
it back then, so I wanted to keep it as a memory of you. I held it close to me
in those four weeks when we separated. It must be this ‘physical form’ due to
the fact that you held this most dear to yourself.”
Lydia gasped. “But how is this
possible is we have to have a physical form of Felix?”
Rina scoffed. “We misinterpreted it!
It’s not a physical of Felix. It’s
bodily form for Felix.”
“You mean he’s going to look like a
bear?!”
“I doubt it. These blue beasts were
portrayed by male actors in the play! Felix will be back to his normal form, if
done properly.”
Lydia blushed. She then grabbed onto
the orb that Faris previously gave to Rine, while she also took both the necklaces
from Leo. “Thank you for buying these.” She looked away. “I think I know why
the merchant girl was selling these… Things like this don’t randomly happen
towards our favor. But, now is not the time to question it.”
She turned around. The light emitted
a large amount of wind but Lydia was finally able to stand. All of the
materials were strangely banding together within the teddy bear. The only thing
that was still in Lydia’s hands were the two necklaces. The blue bear flashed
and slowly, Felix’s silhouette was appearing beside it.
Lydia was very close to reaching
him. “This is it. Once I put this on the silhouette’s hands… he and I will be…
We’ll be… bounded as a couple who becomes caring towards one another for
eternity. This must be the truth,” She said with a smile. “Felix…”
As she put her grip against Felix’s
silhouette, the figure began to color itself in Felix’s appearance.
He slowly opened his eyes. “Lydia…?”
Lydia’s heart warmed up. “Felix…” [End music]
Suddenly, a large wind blew up in
between them and they were separated. Lydia fell back and Felix, in his full
body, fell to the opposite end of the tree. [Music 31.1]
“Fell for it!~” A shadowy figure
appeared by the tree. His shadow turned into Magnus’ full body.
The wind suddenly stopped and it
felt as if nothing happened, but Felix was still there.
“Did it work?!” Forrest shouted from
afar.
Lydia stared blankly at Felix.
“…Kind of…”
Felix’s eyes were covered by his bangs.
“Magnus! What did you do?!”
Magnus was floating in the air.
Hazel tried to shoot an arrow at him but it only bounced off an invisible
barrier that surrounded him.
“Can you not tell? Felix has one of
the necklaces still.”
Lydia checked her hands. “Wh-Where’s
the other one?”
“I don’t have it,” Magnus said in a
joking manner. Still, he really didn’t have the necklace.
Rina clenched her teeth. “Then… who
has it?!”
From behind the tree at a certain
angle where nobody could see, a footstep appeared next to Felix. The entire
figure was shown in full glory, holding onto the other necklace.
“AHHH!” Hazel screeched.
Warren also recognized the figure.
“That’s…”
Both Hazel and Warren spoke
together, “Professor Igor!” [End music]
